Resilient Flora:
Light on the Plot

by Amanda Z B Robbins

9th October – 13th November 2026

Society Cycles, Edinburgh, Scotland

Screened every Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm
(On an adhoc basis around Society Cycles opening hours)

Rooted in a pandemic-era project recording life across local allotments, this visual series by Amanda Z B Robbins explores the subtle interplay between human nurture and the natural world. What began as a study of peaceful plots filled with fruits, flora, and quiet dedication soon evolved into a deeper fascination with atmosphere. The distinct quality of light filtering through these cultivated spaces revealed a new artistic path one driven by mood, shadow, and transient illumination.

In this body of work, light acts not merely as a tool, but as a central subject alongside the plants themselves. Everyday, fleeting scenes encountered by chance are transformed into arresting compositions that evoke both mystery and quiet optimism. Even when bound or enclosed, the featured plant life radiates an undeniable resilience and strength. This exhibition includes
noteworthy pieces from the series, such as Luminance (featured in the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition in 2023) and Tunnel (selected for the 200th RSA Annual Exhibition in 2026).

About Amanda

Amanda is an Edinburgh-based photographer whose passion for the medium began in the 1980s, developing film in her home darkroom and studying at Stevenson and Napier Colleges. After early work in media studies, photographic sales, and event coverage including photographing for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe she recently returned to her creative practice. Active in the local scene through the Edinburgh Photographic Society (EPS) and the Edinburgh Photographic Meetup Group (EPMG), her recent work has earned recognition at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) Annual Exhibitions in both 2023 and 2026.

Robbins’s work blends fine art aesthetics with a documentary approach, focusing primarily on street photography and the natural environment. In this exhibition her practice centres on atmosphere, texture, and light, using thoughtful composition to transform quiet allotment plots, nature scenes, and everyday moments into expressive visual stories. By exploring the interplay of contrast, mood, and depth within the frame, Robbins captures authentic interactions between subjects and their surroundings – inviting viewers to pause, observe, and discover the quiet beauty in ordinary places.
