Kiln & Kitsch is a digital showcase celebrating the intersection of heritage craftsmanship and modern minimalism. This exhibition highlights the graphic work of Edinburgh artist Craig Peebles, who breathes new life into the endangered aesthetic of encaustic tile-making.
While Peebles’ physical practice involves hand-inlaying colored clays, this digital gallery focuses on the striking graphic compositions at the heart of his work. By stripping away the superfluous, Peebles captures the essence of Scotland’s most recognisable symbols. From the architectural strength of Edinburgh Castle and the sharp geometry of the thistle to the playful forms of Nessie, the Kilted Man, and Irn-Bru, these illustrations represent a “materially honest” approach to design.
Presented through a series of crisp, high-definition studies, Kiln & Kitsch highlights Peebles’ signature graphic style. His bold interpretations are distilled into their essential forms, allowing clean lines and vibrant blocks of color to take center stage. This exhibition is a tribute to the “slow craft” movement – reimagined as a sharp, contemporary visual experience for the digital world.

About Craig Peebles
Craig Peebles is an Edinburgh-based master craftsman and 2025 QEST Scholar who reimagines the ancient art of encaustic tile-making through a bold, graphic lens. Drawing on over 30 years of heritage restoration experience, he hand-inlays colored clays to create “materially honest” works where striking illustrations of Scottish icons are built into the very soul of the tile. By marrying traditional technical mastery with a flat, contemporary aesthetic, Peebles transforms a historic architectural craft into a vibrant medium for modern storytelling.
